Digital life: simplified penalties, an express and targeted instrument of justice

In response to the upsurge in complaints (over 12,000) received by the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés (Cnil) since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force, the simplified penalty procedure, introduced in 2022, is designed to punish minor infringements that do not present any particular difficulty. These cases, which have been few in number so far, show that mastery of the rules specific to the European regulation is still a long way off in many sectors of activity in France.
